ChemiClean

ChemiClean (by Boyd Enterprises) is an aquarium treatment used to eliminate cyanobacteria (often called red slime algae) in saltwater reef tanks.

It works by targeting the bacteria that cause the slimy red, purple, or dark green mats that can spread across sand, rocks, and even coral surfaces. Unlike algaecides, ChemiClean is formulated to be reef-safe when used correctly, meaning it does not directly kill corals or invertebrates when dosed as directed.

How it works:

• Disrupts cyanobacteria growth and metabolism

• Causes the cyano to detach and break down in the water column

• Skimmer often pulls out the dead material after treatment

Key benefits:

• Clears red slime/cyano outbreaks in 24–48 hours (typical results)

• Improves water clarity and oxygen flow in the tank

• Helps restore clean rock and sand surfaces

Important usage notes:

• Strong aeration/oxygenation is required during treatment (cyano die-off can lower oxygen)

• Protein skimmer is usually run with the cup removed or adjusted per instructions

• Water changes are recommended after treatment

• Not a long-term fix if underlying issues (high nutrients, poor flow, detritus buildup) aren’t addressed

Common cause of cyano (so it doesn’t come back):

• High nitrates or phosphates

• Low flow areas in the tank

• Overfeeding

• Dirty sand bed or rock detritus buildup
